Life In: Corfu, Greece & Vienna, Austria

Yassas guys! (That’s hello in Greek)

My name is Afrodite and I come from Corfu a small island in Greece. I met Katherine and her mom during their holiday in Greece , summer 2010, while I was working for a tour operator, as their tour director, on a Greek Island-hopping tour. I come from Corfu , a beautiful small island on the west side of Greece. I have been travelling due to work for the last 12 years and by now I am troublingly accustomed to “living out of my suitcase”. However, the past 2 years I have moved to Vienna Austria, due to personal relationship reasons, and have been using it as my base for my ongoing travels.

After growing up and living a pretty chilled out life on the Greek islands, with beautiful beaches , excellent food, outgoing people and a lot of nightlife, moving to a city like Vienna has not been the easiest of things to do…

Vienna is a beautifully constructed city, with well trained , robot-like cold people (comparing to the hotblooded Greeks, that is) That aside, Austria has allowed me to experience the 4 seasons which they still have… 3 months of Spring with medium temperatures, lots of flowers and bugs, 3 months of summer, with long days, out of the ordinary heat and no “beach breeze” to cool off by,3 months of Autumn with the most amazing colours to accompany one during a long walk in the woods and finally 3 months of proper cold, with snow and minus temperatures (too much for a Greek to handle). I’m only saying that because in Greece we seem to only have summer for 8 months, 1 rainy day,4 months of winter and then again 1 rainy day before summer begins again…
I do enjoy the fact that I can very often ski/snowboard in the winter and the fact that everything runs smoothly here with regards to civil services, healthcare, etc. However, making friends here is no easy task… Speaking the language is very important but it is a mission to accomplish as German is not enough… Viennese dialect is a mixture of German and… well I have no clue what they are talking about most of the time…

What I miss most from Greece is my family and friends, the food and the beaches… What I don’t miss is the sad situation we are now stuck with in Greece and all our corrupt politicians which have all taken a toll on the People…

I am not sure how much longer I will be staying in Vienna for.I’m not even sure if I will be moving back to Greece or it will remain even for me “ a holiday destination”.

Life is a journey and home is where your heart is…

It’s so wonderful to hear from Afrodite again! The pics are absolutely gorgeous, as is she. I will always remember my time in Greece with you all. It holds a very warm, fuzzy, and special place in my heart, as do all of you. Thank you for making my 50th birthday dream trip to Greece come true. I miss you. With lots of love, Ramona. xoxoxo
