International Day of the Girl

Today is the International Day of the Girl!
The UN started this holiday last year in order to promote discussion and education about the barriers girls face in this world. Barriers to education, equality, and a better life. These barriers include early marriage, sex trafficking, and violence.
The UN helped make the film Girl Rising that you can see more information here. Girl Rising is all about the Power of Education. The message is simple: Educate Girls and Save the World.
Facts:
-63% of the world’s illiterate youth are female
– there are 33 MILLION fewer girls in primary school than boys
– 14 million girls under the age of 18 will be married off this year; that’s 13 girls in the last 30 seconds
– if India enrolled 1% more girls in secondary school their GDP would rise by $5.5 billion
– the number one cause of death for girls 14-19 is childbirth
When you educate girls you directly:
– reduce poverty
– reduce child mortality
– reduce population growth
– reduce HIV infection rates
A donation of $50 can pay for one YEAR of school for a girl in a developing country!
As the UN says on their website “global change starts locally” and local change starts with you (that was all me).
Celebrate the girls in your life! Spread the word and change the world.
